LICENCE INFORMATION

Provisional Moped Licence

You may hold this at 16. Forms are available from the Post Office. Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) must then be taken to validate the licence, allowing you to ride a moped (50cc / 30mph).

You will need to display 'L' plates and you must not use motorways or carry passengers.

Provisional Motorcycle Licence

At 17, you may hold a provisional motorcycle licence (category A) and ride up to 125cc with a maximum power output of 14.6bhp.

Again, a valid CBT certificate is required. 'L' plates must be displayed, motorways must not be used and no passengers are allowed.

Full Car Licence

If you passed your car test before 1st February 2001, you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without 'L' plates and without taking CBT, although it is strongly advised that you do.

If you passed your car test on or after that date, you will still receive moped entitlement, but you MUST complete a CBT before riding on the road. This CBT will then last the life of the licence, in respect of mopeds (category P).

A full car licence also gives you a provisional motorcycle licence, but CBT MUST be completed before riding up to 125cc.
